When you think of mental health what’s the first thing you think of? You obviously think of giving back! 

Ok, so maybe that’s not the FIRST thing you think of, but you should definitely start thinking about it. Your emotional health core is reliant on giving back, so it’s a good place to start to improve mental health. 

If you don’t remember the purpose of the emotional health core, here’s a refresher. This core is sooooooo important to your overall well-being because it ensures your mind is nurtured through taking care of yourself physically and mentally.

It also involves giving back as an essential element. Through dedicating yourself to helping others, you can build a legacy you’ll be proud of. 

If you’ve done something out of the kindness of your heart for someone else, I’m sure you get what I mean. Doing good for others can make you feel content and happy knowing that you were able to make a difference, no matter how small or large. 

Not only that, but giving back will literally help you when trying toimprove mental health. It can even make your life longer! That’s what I call an improvement! 

Kindness In Action

Did you know that even seeing a small act of kindness can elicit a helpful response?

I was at the store the other day waiting in line to check out. On this particular day, there was a line in front of me consisting of a mother and son. Time seemed to be moving at snail speed as I stood there behind the pair. And what were they getting? 

Junk food. Cookies and chips. In my frustration over waiting for so long, I started to judge the mother and son way too harshly for their choice of purchasing unhealthy foods. 

I finally got to check out, but once again I found myself behind the mother and son as we all went to exit the store. All of a sudden, the son stopped right outside the entrance, took the items, and handed them to someone sitting just outside. He had bought the items for a homeless man. 

I was awestruck! 

I felt horribly for thinking such rude thoughts about the pair, and I immediately went up to him and said: “You are what makes the world work, keep it up!” 

Your emotional health core is connected with giving back because of this very reason. Giving back in any way you can works to improve mental health for yourself and others, just like that son did at the store that day. 

Want to know a secret? A lot of people think that money and power is what drives most, but that’s not the truth. 

Sure, those help us in the long run, but most actually want those things in order to pursue a deeper goal. Maybe they want to donate, or create a business to change the world! Either way, that still comes down to wanting to make a positive mark on the world in order to leave a legacy of greatness. 

I’m no different. Giving back and building a legacy is different for everyone, but for me it comes in the form of writing and creating. 

Through writing a book and creating an app that helps YOU build positive momentum, I’m hoping to give back to the world in a way that inspires others to do so too. This is how giving back can improve mental health, by implementing it into your life you ARE making a difference.

I know what you’re thinking: “So now what?” Well my friends, it’s time to start your own success loop when it comes to giving back. 

By doing so, you’ll create a continuous cycle of joy that always begins and ends with giving back. This will help you improve your mental health and boost your momentum in no time! There are so many different ways for you to give back, and you can start small or go big, it’ll all up to you. 

Here’s 3 different ways you can get started on your journey to improve mental health:

  • Go with what brings you joy. If you absolutely LOVE doing theatre, then volunteer to help your community theatre with painting or building sets. Or, if you enjoy writing, see if you can help someone out through tutoring! 

  • Make it a part of your routine. By implementing giving back into your daily schedule, you’ll find new ways to help out everyday. 

  • Do what you can. Make sure you aren’t overexerting yourself, giving back is meant to bring you joy. If you aren’t feeling good, try giving back in a different way! 

If you take these tips, you’ll be boosting your momentum to improve mental health just by doing a good deed! Plus, you’ll be spreading joy to all those around you!
